A Major Tertiary Hospital for the Sunshine Coast Region

Sunshine Coast University Hospital is a flagship public health facility serving the growing population of the Sunshine Coast. Located in Birtinya within the Kawana Health Campus, the hospital officially opened in 2017 and represents one of Queensland’s largest healthcare infrastructure investments.

Developed as part of a long-term vision for integrated health services in the region, SCUH plays a central role in delivering tertiary and quaternary care closer to home for local communities.

A Scalable and Future-Focused Healthcare Facility

Sunshine Coast University Hospital was designed with long-term growth in mind. Initially delivered with approximately 450 beds, the facility has expanded capacity to over 700 beds, with the ability to grow further to meet future demand.

Key features of the hospital include:

• Specialist medical, surgical and intensive care units
• Women’s and children’s health services
• Mental health facilities
• Advanced diagnostic and imaging services

The hospital’s flexible design allows for staged expansion, ensuring it can respond to the rapid population growth across the Sunshine Coast region.

Integrated Health, Education and Research Precinct

SCUH forms the centrepiece of the broader Kawana Health Campus, a 20-hectare precinct designed to integrate healthcare delivery, education and research.

The campus includes:

• The Skills, Academic and Research Centre (SARC)
• A co-located private hospital operated by Ramsay Health Care
• The Kawana Health Innovation Park, supporting health-related commercial and research activity

This co-location model strengthens collaboration between clinicians, researchers and educators, supporting improved patient outcomes and ongoing innovation in healthcare delivery.

Redback Health’s Role in FF&E Advisory and Project Delivery

Redback Health (formerly RHS) has been a key contributor to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital project since its early planning stages.

Engaged as an FF&E consultant and advisor, and later as part of the Senior Advisory Team through design development and construction, Redback Health supported the project across its lifecycle.

With an FF&E spend of approximately $200 million, the project required detailed coordination and strategic oversight.

Redback Health’s involvement included:

• Long-term FF&E advisory from project inception
• Participation in the Senior Advisory Team
• Supporting alignment between design, clinical requirements and procurement
• Ongoing input through design development and construction phases

This sustained involvement helped ensure the hospital was equipped to meet operational requirements and deliver high-quality healthcare services from opening and beyond.
