Increasing Operating Theatre Capacity to Meet Growing Demand in Sydney’s South

The Sutherland Hospital Operating Theatre Upgrade Project has significantly strengthened surgical services for the communities of Sydney’s south region.

As outlined in the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District’s Clinical Services Plan, the NSW Government committed $81.5 million to redevelop the operating theatre complex, with an additional $7 million allocated for the procurement and installation of a new MRI Suite. The project was successfully completed and handed over in December 2023.

Delivered in two carefully staged milestones over 24 months, the upgrade was designed to minimise disruption to hospital operations, ensuring that a minimum of five operating theatres remained fully functional at all times during construction.

Modern Surgical Facilities Designed for Contemporary Care

The redevelopment has delivered a greatly expanded and modernised operating theatre complex that increases capacity and improves patient flow.

The upgraded facility now includes:

• Seven general operating theatres, one hybrid theatre, and two endoscopy procedure rooms
• Associated preparation, scrub, cleanup, scope processing, and sterile stock areas
• A new Surgical Short Stay Unit and expanded recovery zones
• New staff amenities and workspaces
• Dedicated facilities for patient admission and discharge
• A new MRI Suite and Radius Unit
• A new Central Sterilising Services Department complete with clean and dirty lifts, decontamination areas, pass-through batch washing, sterilisers, and support spaces
• New plant areas

The project achieved an environmentally sustainable design (ESD) target equivalent to ‘Australian best practice’ level (45 points) through a self-certified pathway aligned with the Green Star rating system. Materials and finishes were selected to integrate seamlessly with the existing hospital while meeting rigorous infection control and durability requirements. A perforated mesh screen on the stairwell incorporates Aboriginal artwork that celebrates the local cultural heritage.

Redback Health was engaged as the Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FFE) and Medical Mechanical Equipment (MME) Consultant and Manager for the Sutherland Hospital Operating Theatre Upgrade from 2020 to 2024.

We provided comprehensive end-to-end consultancy and management services, including equipment planning, detailed specification, procurement coordination, and delivery. Our involvement ensured that all new theatres, support areas, and specialist suites were equipped to the highest clinical standards and fully operational upon handover.
